{"id":44074,"date":"2019-05-01T21:30:12","date_gmt":"2019-05-01T21:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/?p=44074"},"modified":"2019-06-25T15:38:09","modified_gmt":"2019-06-25T15:38:09","slug":"aromatherapy-to-the-rescue-the-common-cold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/aromatherapy-to-the-rescue-the-common-cold\/","title":{"rendered":"Aromatherapy to the Rescue: The Common Cold"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We&#8217;re all familiar with the common cold. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More specifically, its symptoms: sore eyes, sore throat, headaches, congestion, runny nose, coughing, earache, (sometimes) fever, fatigue, minor body aches, and a general feeling of \u201cyuckyness\u201d, sort of like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sick-woman-sneezing-in-bed-PXBD2A8-min-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44087\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sick-woman-sneezing-in-bed-PXBD2A8-min-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sick-woman-sneezing-in-bed-PXBD2A8-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sick-woman-sneezing-in-bed-PXBD2A8-min-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sick-woman-sneezing-in-bed-PXBD2A8-min-1920x1280.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sick-woman-sneezing-in-bed-PXBD2A8-min-1620x1080.jpg 1620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The common\ncold is a viral infection of your nose and throat (i.e. upper respiratory\ntract).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Essential Oils Really Work for Colds?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Extensive research has shown the effectiveness of essential oils in dealing with respiratory problems, especially the symptoms that are associated with the common cold. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in Germany an ointment containing essential\noils of eucalyptus, pine needles, and menthol was found effective in adolescents\nwith upper respiratory infections<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also long-standing evidence for the benefits of inhaling certain essential oils to relieve coughs and congestion in the upper respiratory tract using mixtures of Eucalyptus globulus (a certain type of eucalyptus), pine needle and camphor.<a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Essential Oils and Respiratory Tract Infections<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When dealing with respiratory tract infections, certain\nessential oil properties are particularly useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Antimicrobial<\/strong>: the antimicrobial properties of essential oils are well-known<a href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a>, and many of them are. These include Cajeput, Cinnamon, Clove bud, Lavender, Lemon, Lemon-scented eucalyptus, Manuka, Niaouli, Pine, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Thyme, etc. These are particularly good for treating the flu, colds, sore throats and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Antispasmodics<\/strong>: antispasmodics relax the bronchioles of the lungs and may be used to treat coughing; some antispasmodic essential oils include Angelica root, Aniseed, Basil, Bay Laurel, Virginian Cedarwood, Cajeput, Cypress, Clary Sage, Eucalyptus, Sweet Fennel and Thyme<a href=\"#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Antitussives<\/strong>: antitussives are remedies that prevent coughing, either by soothing irritability (demulcents) or removing congestive mucus (expectorants). Essential oils such as Aniseed, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Thyme are good to take in lozenges for cough. They work in part by stimulating the production of saliva, producing more frequent swallowing and therefore suppressing the cough reflex<a href=\"#_ftn5\">[5]<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Demulcents: <\/strong>demulcents soothe and relieve irritated or inflamed mucous membranes; Sandalwood<a href=\"#_ftn6\">[6]<\/a> is a good essential oil to use for this purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Expectorants: <\/strong>expectorants help get rid of phlegm. Expectorant essential oils include Aniseed, Angelica root, Everlasting, Sweet Fennel, Ginger, Thyme<a href=\"#_ftn7\">[7]<\/a> and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Immunostimulants: <\/strong>The immune system needs to be functioning properly during infection, because it\u2019s the body\u2019s defense mechanism against it. Essential oils can support the immune system by inhibiting the development of harmful micro-organisms or by stimulating the immune system; some essential oils including Cajeput, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon, Niaouli, Rosemary, Tea Tree<a href=\"#_ftn8\">[8]<\/a> and Thyme provide support on both ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Essential Oils for the Common Cold: Vicks Vaporub<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever used Vicks VapoRub before?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems like many people have. The majority of people I\ntalk to have memories of their parents giving them Vicks for a cough, cold, or\nchest infection; I remember my parents would rub some on my chest and\/or throat\nand apply some just under my nose. I would always feel better afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research has shown that Vicks really does work<a href=\"#_ftn9\">[9]<\/a>; it works because it contains certain aromatic compounds: eucalyptol, camphor, and menthol<a href=\"#_ftn10\">[10]<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eucalyptus-oil-5TPBY7K-min-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44079\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eucalyptus-oil-5TPBY7K-min-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eucalyptus-oil-5TPBY7K-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eucalyptus-oil-5TPBY7K-min-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eucalyptus-oil-5TPBY7K-min-1920x1280.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eucalyptus-oil-5TPBY7K-min-1620x1080.jpg 1620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Eucalyptol <\/strong>is another name for 1,8-cineole (i.e. the name of the chemical compound); 1,8-cineole is an ingredient found in many proprietary medicines used for respiratory complaints<a href=\"#_ftn11\">[11]<\/a>. It\u2019s an oxide that has antitussive (i.e. cough-preventing), mucolytic (reduces respiratory secretions), analgesic (i.e. pain-relieving), expectorant (i.e. promotes the expulsion of phlegm from the body), antiviral<a href=\"#_ftn12\">[12]<\/a>, antiseptic (i.e. prevents the growth of disease-causing microorganisms) and bronchodilatory properties<a href=\"#_ftn13\">[13]<\/a>. <\/li><li><strong>Camphor<\/strong> is known for its rubefacient quality (among others), increasing blood flow to a site of pain or swelling when applied to the skin<a href=\"#_ftn14\">[14]<\/a>. <\/li><li><strong>Menthol<\/strong> has a soothing and cooling effect on the skin<a href=\"#_ftn15\">[15]<\/a><a href=\"#_ftn16\">[16]<\/a> (when applied topically), on the throat (when taken orally through lozenges or tea, for example) and also serves as a decongestant (when inhaled through diffusion).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to try something ready-made, I suggest this <a href=\"https:\/\/pranarom.ca\/product\/respiratory-balm\/\">Respiratory Balm<\/a>. Tell me what you think!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Use Essential Oils to Treat the Common Cold<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As previously discussed, essential oil components can be absorbed by 4 means<a href=\"#_ftn17\">[17]<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Topical:<\/strong> via external skin using massage, compress or bath.<\/li><li><strong>Inhaled:<\/strong> directly or indirectly with or without steam using diffusers, aromastones, fans, humidifiers, aromasticks, nostril clips etc.<\/li><li>Internal: via internal skin using mouthwashes, gargles, douches, pessaries or suppositories.<\/li><li>Oral: using gelatin capsules or diluted in honey, alcohol or dispersant.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to colds, you\u2019ll most likely be using a mix of\nthese. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some specific ways you can use essential oils for\ncolds<a href=\"#_ftn18\">[18]<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Treat with antimicrobial essential oils such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1360273\/\">Tea Tree<\/a>, Cajeput, Lemon and Red Thyme.<\/li><li>Support the immune system by using immunostimulants such as Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon and Tea Tree.<\/li><li>Eliminate excess mucus by using mucolytics and expectorants such as Aniseed, Eucalyptus, Everlasting, Fennel seed, Angelica root and Hyssop.<\/li><li>Soothe the inflamed mucous membranes by using Sandalwood.<\/li><li>Use steam inhalation with essential oils; make sure to use very hot steam (it\u2019s a hostile environment for viruses)<\/li><li>Sleep is necessary to help your body fight off infection. If you\u2019re having trouble sleeping, try some essential oils for sleep and relaxation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Use Essential Oils for a Sore Throat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are different ways to treat sore throat. Here are some\nideas<a href=\"#_ftn19\">[19]<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Steam inhalations using essential oils such as Lavender, Tea tree, Cajeput and Ravensara <\/li><li>Gentle massage to the throat and chest area with a massage oil blend containing Frankincense, Lavender and Sandalwood can be used.<\/li><li>Add 3 drops of Tea Tree oil to a glass of warm water, mix well and gargle. Repeat 2-3 times a day.<\/li><li>A drop of essential oil in honey (try Palmarosa in a teaspoon of honey; excellent for a sore throat).
